Aloha Friday! Saving Money at Christmas

The last friday before Christmas! Time to hop around the blogosphere with my favorite end of the week meme. Just a fun time to ask a simple question and give a simple answer. It is an easy way to make new friends too.

The hub is centered at Islandlife808.com

My Question:

Has Christmas this year changed for you because of the economy?

My answer:

Yes it has.
Usually we see buying gifts as our way of expressing our love and appreciation for our families. This year money got so very tight that we had to find more creative ways of showing our devotion. I won a large amount of gifts from online giveaways on other blogs.
The rest is homemade.
One good thing was I was able to avoid the crowds at the stores!

Oh yes! I can't spend a dime without thinking if the kids have the room for it, how many pieces is this widget and how long is it going to take to clean up?

No, in fact we spent more money this year than ever before.

it should have, but it didn't. but we wouldn't spend money we didn't have. we do believe in passing on our blessings, and it's been a good year for us.

wishing you a very merry Christmas.

Yeah .. that's for sure!! But God is good and He always finds ways to let us enjoy a tid bit of this present thing:) He never ceases to amaze us how He always finds ways!! And this only reminds us on Christmas that He is the reason we celebrate:) So cool! He gives us presents on His b-day:) That's so like Jesus:):)
Happy Friday and here's my Aloha!!

Yes, it's a factor and it's been okay. My kids are older and so we're all adjusting fine!

I don't think so, it mostly change because I loss my Mom to Cancer and she was a big part of the Holidays. I just can't get that feeling back. I enjoy Chanukah but not Christmas.

No, we're really lucky, and nothing has changed.

not really because of the economy, just because my husband is deployed

We celebrate Chanukah and do not usually go out of control with things since it is really not a gift giving holiday. Of course, we bought things for the boys and later realized we did not need as much. Lots of making fudge for special people at son's school and some relatives.

it changed in the way that we had to find other resources and types of gifts but no Christmas did not change it stayed focused on his birth and the story behind it as well as celebrating with each other

Yes, less gifts but more thought went into them. We shopped at a warehouse sale, which helps too!

It's changed for me due to other circumstances however, I can see how the economy has affected others.
Have a great day!

No not really. I've always tried to hold back the Christmas gifts for my 3 1/2 year old in the hopes of not setting her up for big expectations down the road. I'd like her to focus on giving and helping out with picking out the gifts to donate next year and not be totally hung up on what she wants. Who knows if I'll be able to though but at least I'm trying.

It has had an impact...not necessarily for my girls, but for everyone else for sure.
Because I take part in the Black Friday maddness...I am able to save so much money getting so many things for my girls. So this year, the day after Thanksgiving was when I was done with my own kids. We have to get Stocking stuffers, but that's it.
For everyone else, we really aren't buying gifts this year. I am trying to think of something creative to do for everyone that is really inexpensive, yet heartfelt. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
Merry Christmas!

For me...not really. We cut our lists down over the years. We buy for immediate family only. As I get older I realized its not the dollar amount but the time spent together as we see our parents getting older and family dynamics change.
Have a happy and healthy Christmas.

Yes, we totally cut back this year, but we have wanted to for reasons other than the current economic situation. Our main reason is Christmas is about Jesus...its His birthday...not ours.

Yes it has. We have always lived paycheck to paycheck however so while I feel awful that I cannot afford gifts. It is what it is.

We ended up spending twice as much on the kids this year as we did last year, but we're only buying for immediate family to make up for it.

This year we've spent quite a bit less on Christmas gifts than in years past and have opted out of buying gifts for the adults.
